Elden Ring, as with Dark Souls and Bloodborne before it, allows players access to massive weapons, including massive swords and huge axes that can be better handled using two hands. However, Elden Ring changes the controls that are familiar to “Soulsborne” users in different ways, such as using two hands to hold weapons for maximum effect.
If you’re puzzled by the prompt on the button that teaches you how to dual-wield weapons within Elden Ring, do not fret: You’re not the only one!

Elden Ring guide: How to two-hand weapons
Here’s how to double-wield the massive Elden Ring weapons: When holding a weapon normally, then click the following buttons if you’re carrying your primary weapon in your left hand:
- PS4 or PS5 controller: Triangle + R1
- Xbox One or Xbox Series X controller: Y + RB
- Windows PC (with keyboard and mouse): E + right click
Repeat the same sequence of inputs to return to single-hand posture for weapons.
In the same way, you could double-hand the shield, weapon or staff with your left hand to do the same thing using left click, L1 or left click, depending on the type of platform and controls set up.
It might feel uncomfortable initially, but eventually, it will be second nature.
