Erika Cheung is a ex employee of Theranos famous for her role as an anonymous whistleblower who revealed Theranos’s fraud and shady practices. It is not known much about her childhood or family background. However, she was among six relatives who resided within a caravan park in her early years. Cheung earned her degree in her school at the University of California, Berkeley. She holds a bachelor’s degree with a major in Molecular and Cell Biology and Linguistics.

After graduation, Cheung joined the robust and well-respected startup, Theranos, founded by Elizabeth Holmes. While at Theranos, Cheung worked as an in-lab tester beginning in 2013. The job involved taking blood samples of patients and providing the results. She also reviewed laboratory data to ensure that the equipment utilized for testing was working properly.

But, Cheung soon discovered discrepancies regarding how Theranos carried out its tests and how it used the data it collected. Following a discussion regarding the methods employed by the company with COO Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, Cheung quit her position at Theranos in the year 2014. Cheung later shared her experiences with Theranos to the journalist John Carreyrou, thereby becoming an anonymous whistleblower in the expose on Theranos written through Carreyrou to The Wall Street Journal.

After quitting Theranos, Cheung became an important source for journalist John Carreyrou’s pieces and his book, ‘Bad Blood: The Tips and Lies of the Silicon Valley Startup,’ revealing Theranos its frauds. Cheung was also a witness in the courtroom during The trial for Elizabeth Holmes in 2021. After her time with Theranos, Cheung joined Antibody Solutions, an independent research firm in Sunnyvale, California. Cheung worked at Antibody Solutions between 2014 and 2016 as an Associate in research and Development Associate.

In 2017 Cheung was hired by Betatron, a company based in Hong Kong, which she worked for in various positions within the company. Following her time as a Program Director and later as a Program Director, Cheung currently serves as an advisor to Betatron. In 2019, Cheung floated Ethics in Entrepreneurship, an organization whose focus is on encouraging ethical conduct among founders of startups. It appears that she’s currently located out in her home in the US and shuffles her time between NY and LA.
