Billboard will regularly update the chart and create stories and video on the chart that will be shared on its website and Twitter. Advertisers can pay for sponsorship of the chart, referred to as “the billboard hot Trending powered with Twitter,” or buy sponsorships in the videos and articles written on the basis of the charts.
Billboard has been for a long time the primary source of information for the music industry for determining what’s most well-known: it has the most popular charts for the most popular albums and songs and also rankings specifically for genres like hip-hop and country. The company approached Twitter about last year about establishing an updated chart that shows the music that people talk about most through social networks. The two companies will unveil the service during the Twitter presentation for advertisers on Wednesday.

Music is the top subject of discussion on Twitter according to Sarah Rosen, the social-media company’s director of partnerships with entertainment. If a performer launches a new album or new merchandise or performs at a significant festival the fans of their music go to Twitter to discuss it. The chart is different from Billboard because it’s not assessing the music that people are listening to and what they are talking about. “This is all connected to conversations,” Rosen said. “This is a different method to slice and dice music data that is different from what they’re doing with other charts available.”
